US Stocks See Slight Drops Despite a Strengthening US Economy

Posted by Sarah on Feb 4, 2012 in Fine Articles

World stocks fell in recent stock market activity on news the US economy grew more slowly than expected in the last quarter of 2011, while the euro rose on hopes of an imminent deal on Greece’s debt that could help avert a disorderly default.

The Dow Futures and S&P Futures fell 0.45 percent and 0.08 percent respectively for their first weekly drops in four weeks. The Nasdaq, which you can speculate on with GFT Markets, was up 1.07 percent on the week, stretching its winning streak to four weeks.

The United States, the world’s biggest economy, grew at a rate of 2.8 percent in the 4th quarter of 2012, the fastest quarterly rate in 1.5 years.

Nevertheless, US growth fell short of economists’ forecast, fueling worries about US growth in 2012 and speculation that the Federal Reserve would need to provide more help.

The Fed Chairman, Ben Bernanke, last week painted a picture of an economy mired in slow growth, and the Fed delayed the timing for an interest rate hike until at least late 2014. He also suggested the US central bank is open to buying more bonds in a bid to stimulate borrowing and investments.

The Fed’s extended low-rate vow and Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke’s suggestion that the central bank is ready to provide more stimulus if the economy deteriorates come at a time when recent data has signaled a strengthening US economy. New orders for US durable goods increased more than expected in December.

Underlying trends continued to point to improving employment market conditions even as new claims for US unemployment benefits rose last week. New home sales, however, fell 2.2 percent in December. Economists had expected a modest increase.

The US company reporting season appears to be off to a weaker-than-usual start, with the percentage of companies beating estimates so far at 58 percent, down sharply from comparative performances at this point in the earnings cycle in recent reporting periods.
